The Definitive Picture of Online Gambling in Papua New Guinea
Online gambling is reshaping leisure spending across Papua New Guinea. Yet reliable, PNG-specific data has been almost impossible to find — until now. The 2026 Papua New Guinean Punter Survey, conducted exclusively by PNG Online Casino Review, delivers the most comprehensive look at how Papua New Guinean adults engage with online casinos, sports betting, and digital gaming.
Between 1 March and 31 March 2026, our research team surveyed 1,247 verified Papua New Guinean adults who had engaged in some form of online gambling in the preceding 12 months. Respondents were recruited via targeted social media campaigns, community groups on Facebook and WhatsApp, and a partner panel of registered users on our platform. All data was collected anonymously and securely, with no personally identifiable information retained.
This page presents the full findings — from payment preferences to trust factors — with every data point fully attributed and ready for citation. Journalists, researchers, and affiliate partners are encouraged to cite this survey freely, using the reference formats provided below.

Sampling Approach
Respondents were recruited through a stratified convenience sample targeting PNG adults across all four regions: Highlands, Momase, Islands, and Southern. Quota controls ensured representation across gender (male/female/non-binary: 58%/40%/2%), five age bands (18–24, 25–34, 35–44, 45–54, 55+), and three settlement types (urban, peri-urban, rural). The survey was offered in both English and Tok Pisin to reduce language barriers.
Respondents were screened at the outset with two questions: confirmation of PNG residency and confirmation of at least one online gambling session in the preceding 12 months. Those who could not confirm both criteria were excluded from the dataset. Duplicate IP addresses and responses with implausible completion times (under 90 seconds for a 28-question survey) were also removed, accounting for the exclusion of 83 responses from an initial pool of 1,330.
All results reported on this page are weighted to align with Papua New Guinea's adult population distribution as estimated from the 2021 National Population and Housing Census and interpolated forward to 2026. The weighted margin of error at the 95% confidence level is ±2.8 percentage points.

Below are the ten headline statistics from our survey. These figures represent the core of what makes this dataset uniquely valuable for researchers, journalists, and policymakers seeking to understand online gambling behaviour in Papua New Guinea.
Preferred Payment Methods
The payment landscape for Papua New Guinean online gamblers reflects the country's rapidly evolving digital finance ecosystem. Mobile money dominates, underscoring the central role of platforms like MiPay and BSP Mobile Banking in everyday financial life — even for discretionary spending like online gambling.
Primary Deposit Method Used (% of respondents)
- Mobile Money (MiPay / BSP Mobile) 38%
- Bank Transfer (direct) 24%
- Cryptocurrency (Bitcoin/USDT) 19%
- Credit / Debit Card (Visa/Mastercard) 11%
- Other (Skrill, POLi, vouchers) 8%
Cryptocurrency adoption is notably high at 19% — a figure that far exceeds comparable surveys in neighbouring Pacific nations, where crypto usage sits below 8%. This is likely driven by the practical appeal of instant, borderless transactions for PNG players who face limited credit card acceptance from international casino operators. Urban respondents were 3.4 times more likely to use cryptocurrency than rural respondents, reflecting infrastructure disparities.

Total monthly gambling expenditure varies sharply across age cohorts. The 35–44 group represents the highest-spending segment — a pattern consistent with peak earning years and greater disposable income. Notably, the 18–24 cohort, while lowest in average spend, shows the highest frequency of sessions per month, suggesting more numerous but smaller-stakes sessions.
Mean Monthly Online Gambling Spend (PGK)
Source: PNG Online Casino Review Punter Survey, n=1,247, Q: "Approximately how much do you spend on online gambling per month in PGK?" Self-reported; winnings not deducted. March 2026.The overall weighted mean of K 420/month masks significant variance. The top 10% of spenders (heavy users) account for an estimated 47% of total reported expenditure in our sample, a distribution consistent with Pareto-style concentration seen in global gambling datasets. The median spend of K 180/month provides a more representative picture of the typical PNG punter's outlay.

Pokies remain the dominant game format by a wide margin. The digital migration of the traditional pokies machine — so embedded in PNG's brick-and-mortar entertainment culture — appears to have translated powerfully to the online environment. Live dealer games are surging, particularly among the 25–44 demographic, who cite the social and immersive dimensions as key appeal factors.
Game Category Preference (% selecting as primary game type)

Source: PNG Online Casino Review Punter Survey, n=1,247, Q: "Which other game types do you play regularly?" Multiple selection. March 2026.The rise of crash-style games (such as Aviator) — at 33% secondary engagement — is a notable finding. This genre, almost unknown in PNG before 2024, has achieved rapid mainstream penetration, particularly among younger male players in the 18–34 bracket. Anecdotally, its fast-paced, low-complexity format suits mobile play during commuting and work breaks.
What PNG Punters Value Most: Payout Speed vs Bonus Size vs Game Variety
We asked respondents to rank the four most important factors when choosing an online casino. The results deliver a clear verdict: how fast you can access your winnings matters more than anything else. This aligns with a global trend but is amplified in PNG, where banking infrastructure delays can make slow withdrawal processing particularly frustrating.
Most Important Factor When Choosing an Online Casino (% rating as #1 priority)
Source: PNG Online Casino Review Punter Survey, n=1,247, Q: "What is the single most important factor when you choose an online casino?" Single-choice. March 2026.Breaking this down by age reveals interesting divergences. Players aged 18–24 prioritise bonuses at a higher rate (26% vs 18% overall), while players aged 45–54 skew heavily toward payout speed (56%). This suggests bonus-led acquisition strategies are particularly effective for younger demographics, whereas older, higher-spending players may churn rapidly if withdrawal processing is slow.

Beyond the functional preference factors above, we probed the deeper trust signals that lead PNG punters to commit to a particular online casino. Licensing and security credentials top the list, though the data reveals a meaningful gap between awareness of licensing and the ability to actually verify it independently.
A critical concern surfaced in follow-up questioning: while 74% rate a valid licence as essential, only 31% reported they had ever directly verified a casino's licence number on a regulatory authority's website. This trust-verification gap represents a significant consumer protection challenge — and an opportunity for trusted review platforms to bridge the information asymmetry.
Device Usage: Mobile vs Desktop by Age Group
The dominance of mobile is a defining feature of the PNG online gambling market. With smartphone penetration expanding rapidly across urban and peri-urban PNG, the shift to mobile-first play has been swift and decisive. Understanding the age-segmented breakdown helps operators and platforms design appropriately for their target audience.
Primary Device Used for Online Gambling by Age Group
Source: PNG Online Casino Review Punter Survey, n=1,247, Q: "What device do you use most often when gambling online?" Single-choice. March 2026.The 55+ age bracket is the only cohort where desktop usage exceeds mobile. This is partly explained by familiarity with home computing equipment, partly by a greater prevalence of home broadband (versus mobile data-reliant younger players), and partly by the higher-value sessions older players engage in — where a larger screen offers comfort during extended table game or pokies sessions. The overall weighted mobile figure of 78% underscores that operators who haven't invested in mobile optimisation are risking the majority of the PNG market.

Our survey included a dedicated section on responsible gambling, exploring awareness of support resources, self-reported problem indicators, and attitudes toward gambling limits. The findings present a nuanced picture: awareness is growing, but significant gaps in actionable knowledge remain.
Responsible Gambling Tool Usage (% who have ever used)
Source: PNG Online Casino Review Punter Survey, n=1,247, Q: "Have you ever used any of the following responsible gambling tools at an online casino?" Multiple selection. March 2026.The finding that 39% had never seen responsible gambling information on a casino they actively use is concerning and suggests non-compliance or inadequate prominence among some offshore operators targeting the PNG market. The 22% who scored 3 or higher on a Problem Gambling Severity Index screener (indicating at-risk or problem gambling behaviour) aligns broadly with estimates from the Pacific-wide PGSI study published by FARE (Foundation for Alcohol and Drug Education) in 2025.

Online gambling in Papua New Guinea exists in a complex legal environment. The Gaming Machine Act 1993 and subsequent regulations govern land-based gambling.
